Decabromodiphenyl ethane CAS number is 84852-53-9, referred to as DBDPE and antimony trioxide (Sb2O3) after compound can be used for ABS, PS, PP, PE, PA6, TPE, EP, PBT material such as flame retardant, flame retardant grade UL94 V-0. Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) has the advantages of low permeability, good thermal stability, insoluble in water, no corrosion, no odor, high flame retardant efficiency, green environmental protection and so on. It can be used for flame retardant of household appliances, office appliances, computer shell, engineering plastics, insulating materials and elastomer materials.

Decabromodiphenyl ethane is a white powder, insoluble in water, ethanol, acetone, benzene, chlorinated aromatics, non-toxic, tasteless, non-corrosive.

 

2,Product characteristics

(1) Decabromodiphenyl ethane and plastic compatibility is good, flame retardant products do not produce precipitation, frosting, agglomeration, delamination and other adverse phenomena.

(2) Environmentally friendly, decomposition or combustion does not produce toxic PBDO, PBDDY, PBDF, etc., itself non-toxic, no side effects on animals and plants.

(3) It has good UV resistance, low permeability and strong light resistance.

(4) Wide adaptability, can be used for a variety of polyolefin, engineering plastics, thermosetting materials, elastomers, wire and cable flame retardant.

(5) Strong compatibility, can be combined with antimony trioxide and other synergistic agents to play a better synergistic flame retardant effect.

4,Flame retardant mechanism

(1) The polymer combustion process will produce a large number of free radical HO., reduce free radical HO.The concentration of HO is of great significance to prevent combustion. Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) decomposes a large number of bromine free radicals Br.,and Br. It reacts with HO., thus consuming HO., interrupting combustion.

(2) Decabromodiphenylethane and antimony trioxide compound, the composite flame retardant decomposition at high temperature to produce a large number of high-density SbBr3, covering the surface of the material, isolated oxygen convection, prevent heat transfer, the generation of SbBr3 also need a large number of free radicals HO. Thus play an efficient gas phase and condensed phase flame retardant effect.

 

5,Production process

330kg of bromine and 114.5kg of catalyst are added to the bromination reactor, so that the temperature of the reaction system is about 25℃, and 15kg of diphenethane heated by steam to a molten state is slowly added at this temperature to control the drop acceleration and prevent the explosion and bromine injection. After the drop, the temperature of the reaction system gradually rose to 58℃, and was controlled at about 58-60℃ for 6-7 hours. After the end of the reaction, all the materials in the reactor are transferred to the distillation tank, and water is added and heated to steam bromine. After removing the excess bromine, cooling the final product, filtering, washing with water to neutral, adding the post-treatment agent for 8h ball milling, to achieve the required whiteness, press filtration, drying, post-heat treatment, air grinding and other post-treatment processes, to obtain a stable product decabromodiphenyl ethane. In particular, it should be noted that the diameter of diphenyl ethane's feeding droplet has an important effect on the purity and color of decabromodiphenyl ethane.

 

6,Application examples

(1) Flame retardant PP

After modifying PP with composite flame retardants DBDPE and Sb2O3, the heat release rate and effective heat of combustion of flame retarded PP are reduced, the oxygen index is increased to 24.5, and the flame retardant performance is improved.

(2) Flame retardant HIPS

Decabromodiphenyl ethane and Sb2O3 used together, the synergistic effect, 2:1-3:1 flame retardant effect is the best, and better than the flame retardant effect used alone. Mg(OH)2 used in combination with DBDPE/ Sb2O3 has the effect of inhibiting smoke.

(3) Flame retardant PBT

Flame  retardant PBT containing 10% decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) and 5% Sb2O2 compared with pure PBT, its ignition time is extended, the average heat release rate is greatly reduced, the flame retardant performance is greatly improved, and the oxygen index can reach 30.

(4) Flame retarded PE

With the increase of the amount of DBDPE, the notch impact strength and tensile strength of the material decrease greatly, and the bending strength and hardness increase instead, therefore, when used for flame retardant PE, the amount of DBDPE should not be too large. PE flame retardant is more difficult, the addition of halogen-free flame retardant to reach 35-45%, the mechanical properties of PE material is greatly affected, generally by adding PE flame retardant masterbatch LXM-PEM8007 can meet the requirements.

(5) flame-retardant ABS

DBDPE synergistic Sb2O3 flame retardant ABS, DBDPE added 15%, Sb2O3 added 4%, ABS has good mechanical properties, flame retardant performance reached UL94 V-0, oxygen index is greater than 28.Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) flame retardant part of the material formula is as follows:

Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) has high decomposition temperature, good thermal stability, high bromine content, small particle size, non-toxic, and can replace decabromodiphenyl ether. Decabromodiphenyl ethane and antimony trioxide compound flame retardant system, the surface treatment requirements of Sb2O3 is not high,from a general experience, decabromodiphenyl ethane and Sb2O3 appropriate ratio of 3:1, but also to inhibit the combustion of droplets.
